Need to build a healthier self and a better world? Try Charity Miles.
Since time immemorial people have embraced fitness routines such as walking, biking riding and jogging, as an integral part of their daily life. The most profound driving factor is to lead a healthier life, however, over the last couple of years this has taken a strange but beneficial twist.
You can use your daily run to kill (figuratively of course) two birds with one stone – keep fit and raise money for charity. Now, hold on, I am not referring to taking part in marathon or a charity walk, no. I mean raise money in your own personal capacity, at your own time and at your convenience.
Launched in 2012, Charity Miles lets you turn that walk to the store or to the subway into a charitable act. This free app lets you donate money to a choice of 31 charities when you walk, bike or run. The app which is compatible with all smart devices, uses your phones GPS to keep track of the mileage covered and converts these miles into charity donations.
Backed by corporate sponsors, Charity miles donate 25 cents to a charity of your choice whenever you walk a mile and 10 cents from every mile covered on a bicycle. Understandably this small chunk of change may, mistakenly so, seem like a big joke, but it most certainly isn’t. For instance, since its inception charity miles has raised over a million dollars in corporate sponsorship. Your role as a charitable soul is to drain the entire amount in the direction of these 31 charitable organizations .In recognition of their efforts Charitable Miles won the SXSW interactive people award.
And just how does it work? Upon downloading the app, which is easy to use and features an intuitive interface, just pick a charity and get going. Once you have picked a charity, the sponsor’s ad appears on your screen as well as a time. Click the start button, embark on your activity and once you finish click the stop button. Interestingly, you are not required to walk in batches of a mile at a time, oh no, it is the cumulative distance that counts. Just hit the start button and go about your daily life activities, the app logs your distances and makes the requisite donations. No hassles, no pressure. Charity Miles lets you change the world, on step at a time, without ever getting in your way. Now that’s charity, redefined.
Among the worthy causes that are set to benefit from your fitness routine include Autism speaks, Stand up to Cancer, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, and Alzheimer’s Association.
The app is the perfect motivation to get off your couch and lace up your running shoes; not just for your benefits alone but to also help those in need. Marathon and walks are good and useful, but you can only hit up your friends for charity donations for so long before they are wary of your efforts. With this app you can invite them all and make their daily a physical activities count towards helping those in need. Moreover, the app is versatile enough to include activities such as dancing and roller skating – as long as it human powered – it a charitable act.
